HISTORY OF THE PLAZA

Canfield Plaza was developed in 1970 by national developers, the Simon Family. Rothchild's Clothing was an original and long time tenant, located in the same space currently occupied by Canfield's Sporting Goods. The oldest current tenant is Jensen Tire -- formerly Goodyear -- and Jensen Tire also has the distinction of being the longest-running tenant since the property was developed.

The building which sits farther east of Canfield's and currently houses the Westlake Ace Hardware store was added in 1975 as the original Hinky Dinky Grocery headquarters for the chain, which operated in Nebraska and Iowa until the 1980s.

Investors Realty began their relationship with LeRoy Canfield and the Canfield family in 1992 and helped them relocate their current store on West Center in 1994. The remaining freestanding buildings on the property were built later: Arby's Restauant in 1994, Taco Bell (next to Jensen Tire) in 1997, and most recently in 2005, a Scooter's Coffehouse kiosk, replacing the circular bank building in the north parking lot.

A LITTLE ABOUT CANFIELD'S SPORTING GOODS

50,000 square feet of camping, fishing, hunting, scouting and rugged outdoor wear!

Canfield's Sporting Goods was founded in 1946 as an army surplus store, known only as Canfield's. It was located in the back of the family's tailor shop. By 1949 the store had outgrown that location and moved to 512 North 16th Street. The store grew to include sporting goods and the need for a larger building became evident. In 1962 Canfield's moved to 2415 Cuming Street.

Canfield's Sporting Goods soon became known throughout Nebraska, and in 1963 was invited to join the Southwest Buying Syndicate (today known as NATIONS BEST SPORTS). With membership in NBS, Canfield's Sporting Goods became a well-known name throughout the Midwest.

In 1994 Canfield's moved again, this time to our current location. The store now boasts an extensive fishing and hunting department; a large clothing area containing both work and outdoor sports apparel; a camping department that stocks gear for rock climbing, backpacking, and car camping; a large footwear section carrying work boots, waders, sandals, and backpacking and casual footwear; and one of the largest scouting departments in the Midwest. |
